Last month I wrote about the opportunity the ITAM Forum has to join the Linux Foundation as a stand-alone, self-funded project. I’m pleased to report that during October 2025, the ITAM Forum’s Trustee Board unanimously approved this move, which ITAM Forum members also support. We’re now working to finalise this move from the 1st February 2026 onwards.
About the Linux Foundation
Created in 2007, the Linux Foundation is a vendor-neutral ‘home’ for open-source projects and communities, providing back office, shared services to help projects grow. Examples include the FinOps Foundation, OpenChain, and SPDX. The Foundation is designed for neutral, cross-industry collaboration with projects retaining their own governance. It also offers a recognised pathway to international standards through the Joint Development Foundation.
This is an exciting opportunity for us. During 2020, we began – as a spin-out of ISO 19770 (the ISO ITAM Family of Standards) – and built the ITAM From from the ground up. It’s been a brilliant journey, and we’re excited about our next chapter. Our mission – to promote the business practice of IT Asset Management – stays the same, supported by operational scale that will enable us to deliver more and faster. Besides our mission, we’ll keep our website, logo, branding, events, and our vibrant member community and members’ portal.
What Members Told Us
During October 2025, we surveyed ITAM Forum members to gauge their feedback on this move. Of those who gave their feedback:
- 76% supported/strongly supported the move
- 15% were neutral/unsure
- 10% opposed/strongly opposed the move
We’ll continue to provide updates to our members about the ITAM Forum joining the Linux Foundation, including timings and how the membership experience may change and for the better.
Plans for 2026
Besides the move to the Linux Foundation, we’re working on several new and expanded activities for 2026, including new:
- Special Interest Groups – with identified outputs – launching in January
- In-person events schedule – including Australia
- Industry research on topics of most important to ITAM professionals (yes, you told us those topics).
2026 will be an exciting year for the ITAM Forum. We’re thrilled that all of you will be coming along with us!
